Erin M. Riley
Philadelphia-based artist Erin M. Riley uses traditional tapestry techniques to weave images of young women in states of undress or exposure. These works are the product of the artists' research into addiction, sexual experimentation, popular internet culture and the effects of single parent households and varying socio-economic statuses. Riley is interested in the honesty of sexuality, but also how courtships, sex and pornography are changing as a result of the mass depiction of these intimate interactions online. Her source images are photos she herself has sent to lovers and the objects with which she has formed strong psychological attachments to, often indicators of deaths, arrests, and addictions. Her works explore the assimilation of private images into public domain and evoke the conflicted feelings of shame and power one feels upon glimpsing someone else's intimate exchanges.
